The story starts with Mare Barrow walking the streets of her village. However there are other's that live in the world. This sci-fy book has two groups of people. The Reds, commoners, and The Silvers, the royal people. So what's the thing that separates them? The color of their blood. Also that the Silvers have powers such as telekinesis or super strength. Mare lives with her mother, father, and younger sister (Gisa Barrow). She also has two brothers, Shade and Bree, who were sent off to war at the ages of 18. Soon Mare will be doomed to the same fate. All Reds must be an apprentice by the time that they turn 18 or they'll be sent to war. Mare's friend, Kilorn Warren, is the apprentice of a fisherman, also an orphan due to his father dying in war and his mother running away. When Kilorn's master dies he becomes eligable for war and Mare is ready to do anything to save him, including make a deal with a smuggling company to get Kilorn to safety. The Silvers have been on top for as long as Mare Barrow can remember. However this brings out the rebeliousness in many Reds. A group bands together and fights the Silvers with the name, The Scarlet Guard.
